A 42-year-old Eastern Cape father is expected to appear in court in Libode on Monday for allegedly poisoning his three sons.

The family tragedy unfolded at Magcekeni Locality near Libode this weekend, when the man is alleged to have fed poisoned chocolate sweets to the boys, as well as to a neighbour’s child.

Police initially said that two of the man’s children died on Saturday, and later confirmed that the third child died on Sunday.

The deceased were brothers, Sipho Lubuzo (4), Sinakekele (5) and Kungawo (8).

The neighbour’s child survived the poisoning and was later discharged from hospital.

The children were apparently being cared for by a neighbour as their mother was in Cape Town.

Eastern Cape Safety MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, said she was saddened by the tragedy.

“There are no words that can express how I feel at this barbaric act. Innocent lives have been cut short senselessly. My deepest condolences go out the grieving mother whose three children have been a victim of an evil act from the same man who should have been their protector,” she said.
