Farmers in the Dordrecht area battled a veldfire last night, which they say was caused by young men celebrating the end of their initiation.
According to tradition initiates must live in a hut made out of grass which is then burned down to symbolize the death of their youth.
A local farmer Peter Cloete Spoke to AlgoaFM news on Saturday morning and said about 600 hectares were destroyed in the fire.
"We had about 30 farmers fighting the fires until 11 o clock last night. We hope that no animals were burnt"
Cloete says if animals have been killed in the fire, charges will likely be laid at the local police station.
