Eastern Cape police are investigating following the murder and assault of an elderly couple at their farm in Maclear.
Police spokesperson, Captain Ursula Roelofse, said âit is alleged that yesterday (Weds 26 October) at about 18:00 five men approached a farm worker at Rustig farm, about 8 km outside Maclear.â
She said they had indicated that they wanted to buy some cattle.
âThe farm worker referred them to the owner 74-year-old Louis Van den Berg, who showed them to the gate of the farm. After a while the farm worker heard screams and went to investigate,â said Roelofse.
âThe suspects chased him and took him to the farm house, where they demanded the keys to the safe. After a struggle, which left Mrs van den Berg injured, they got access to the safe and took several fire-arms and fled on foot after they tied up the worker and Mrs Van den Berg.â
Captain Roelofse said the worker managed to untie himself and contacted the family members who contacted the police.
âMrs Van Den Berg was taken to hospital for medical attention and Mr Van Den Bergâs body was found at the gate of the yard, alleged to have been assaulted and stabbed.â
Roelofse said anyone who can assist the police with any information which can lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact the Investigating Officer, Captain Nkampini on 071481 2686 or the nearest police station.
