EC family rescued from camping site

An Eastern Cape family with two sick children had to be assisted from a camping site near Hankey Bay after a swollen Berg River blocked their only route out.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says the river swelled after a night of heavy rains and cut off the Berg River camping site.

He says while other campers were prepared to wait for the river to subside the family of six had an 18-month-old girl and three-year-old boy who were suffering from dehydration, fever and diarrhea.

Lambinon says the NSRI set up a rope line across the river and used a sea rescue craft to extricate the family.

It also used the opportunity to deliver firewood, supplies and drinking water to the remaining campers.
