EC escapees: Seven arrested and seven still at large

Eastern Cape police have re-arrested five of the eight trial-awaiting inmates who escaped in Mount Ayliff last week.

They are part of a group that allegedly broke doors and windows to find their way out of the police holding cells.

Sindiso Ndzelu, Mfundiso Nogwanya, Abongile Mpandana, Andile Loni and Nathi Mavela were re-arrested in several villages across the Alfred Nzo District Municipality between Sunday and Tuesday.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said the escapees, charged with various crimes including rape and murder, will face an additional charge for escaping from lawful custody.

He said other charges relating to Malicious Damage to Property may also be added.

Brigadier Kinana said more arrests were imminent.

Meanwhile, four prisoners who escaped from the SADA Correctional Facility in Whittlesea are still at large.

Two have been re-arrested in Keiskammahoek.

Kinana says all the men are considered dangerous.
