Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula has died.
Makapula would have turned 57 on Tuesday.
Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says MEC Makupula died in an East London hospital early on Monday morning following a long illness.
The Premier Phumullo Masualle also expressed his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire province to Makupula's friends and family.
Makupula, who was born in Duncan Village in 1961, obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Walter Sisulu University as well as a Higher Diploma in Education.
He served in various structures within the ANC.
Makupula leaves behind a wife and three children.
Details of his funeral will be communicated in due course.
