The Eastern Cape Education Department will honour slain anti-apartheid activist, Matthew Goniwe, by naming a scholarship programme after the Cradock educator.
What was previously known as the B-Ed Learnership, will now be known as the Matthew Goniwe Scholarship.
Goniwe along with Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli, were killed by apartheid security police in 1985.
The launch of the new name will be held at the East London International Convention Centre on Friday.
Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, said the Mathew Goniwe Scholarship aims to help address the teacher shortages in public schools, especially those in township and rural areas.
"Additionally, this scholarship will focus on scarce and critical skills that are both national and provincial priorities with an emphasis on Mathematics and Physical Science, Foundation phase and languages," Makupula said.
"The recipients are then expected to give back by teaching the same number of years for which they spent in completing the Bachelor of Education degree, which is usually four years," Makupula added
Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said the scholarship will focus on Maths and Science which were the subjects that Goniwe had taught.
"Despite the numerous calls for him to leave the rural area he opted to remain there because he wanted to ensure that learners from rural areas get the proper attention, Mtima concluded.
