A 9-month-old baby girl died in the early hours of Thursday when her father apparently fell asleep behind the wheel of their car on the N2.
Police Captain Malcolm Pojie says the accident happened at around 03:20 between Stilbaai and Riversdal, 12km's from Riversdal.
The road had to be closed for several hours after the accident.
Pojie says the baby's mother, a female passenger and a boy were taken to the Stilbaai hospital with minor injuries.
A case of culpable homicide and driving a vehicle without a license are being investigated.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
