The Eastern Cape Education Department says steps are being taken to fill vacant posts for teachers at schools in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas.
Spokesperson Loyiso Pulumani, says the department is concerned about the problem.
He says District Director Dr Nyathi Nsiko has invited all principals with vacancies to come forward.
"We have already filled over 15 positions within PE alone. In Graaff Reinet we have filled 39. We are in the process of filling vacancies but unfortunately it would seem that there are some sections that are intent on closing the schools, not withstanding the facts that the Department is taking all steps to fill these posts as soon as possible"
Earlier, several schools warned that if the Department of Education did not address their problems, they would be closing their doors on Wednesday.
A meeting is currently underway with the chairpersons from the governing bodies of schools in the Northern areas, who will give feedback on their plans of action.
