EC Eds Dept apologises for ‘rare’ exam blunder

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has apologised for a blunder that saw learners sitting for the Accounting Paper 1 trial exam on Monday, writing the same paper that matriculants wrote last year.

Head of Department, Dr Naledi Mbude, said in a subsequent statement that “a wrong file was sent to the printers and an incorrect version of the paper supplied to learners on 30 August 2021.”

Mbude said this error was regretted “and urged the public to allow the department to take the necessary steps to correct this matter.”

“This is because the department takes pride in ensuring the credibility and integrity of Examinations at all times,” she said.

The Eastern Cape Education Department said it would “like to apologise for this rare error and the inconvenience that it might have caused to the Grade 12 Accounting learners, teachers, and their parents.”

“Full re-audit and quality assurance of all the papers supplied or to be supplied for the current NSC 2021 trial examinations is underway to ensure that this does not happen in our system again,” Mbude said.

The Eastern Cape Education Department said that the Accounting Paper 1 Question paper will be rewritten on Wednesday, 22 September 2021.

DA MPL, Yusuf Cassim, said when the same paper is used, the competency of these learners cannot be tested properly.

“It will not serve the intended purpose and will taint the outcome of further education and training applications,” he said.

Cassim said he wrote to MEC Fundile Gade requesting a full investigation.
