EC dagga busts: 8 arrests, 75 bags confiscated

Eastern Cape Police have arrested a total of 8 suspects and seized a large quantity of dagga worth 3.6 million rand in two separate busts at Seven Fountains near Grahamstown and on the  R342 between Paterson and Addo.

In the first incident yesterday, a joint Operation with members of the PE Flying Squad, Uitenhage K9 unit, SAPS Seven Fountains and Grahamstown Highway Patrol netted a R2 million dagga bust - one of the biggest busts in the province.
Captain Mali Govender says six suspects aged between 35 and 60 were arrested after police acted on information of narcotics being transported.

They located a Nissan Quantum, as well as the lead vehicle, a VW Polo, next to the N2, close to Seven Fountains.
Upon searching the Quantum they discovered 46 large bags of dagga, weighing 980 kg with an estimated street value of nearly R2m.
The six men were arrested on the spot and will face charges of dealing in dagga when they appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court soon.

There was also a large dagga bust, worth close on R1.6 million in Paterson the night before in which two men were arrested.
Captain Andre Beetge says the suspects were apprehended on the R342 between Paterson and Addo after Paterson police members on patrol spotted a suspicious silver grey Opel Zaphira with a trailer.

The Zaphira was pulled over after a chase of several kilometres and 29 bags of dagga were found packed inside the trailer.
Beetge says the total weight of the dagga was 640 kg with an estimated street value of R1,6 million.
The two suspects aged 29 and 34 will appear in the Alexandria Magistrate's Court today on a charge of dealing in dagga.
