EC crime victims laid to rest

Three Eastern Cape people who were the victims of a murderous rampage by a 33-year-old relative have been laid to rest in a joint service by residents of Nkelekethe Location in Teko Springs Village near Centane on Saturday.

The funeral service was also attended by Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Nancy Sihlwayi.
Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, says Centane police also 'passed the hat around' to raise money to assist the victims families with the cost of the funeral.

The three, Kholisile Sopele (86), Nophumzile Tenjiswa Mdunywa (59) and Nogcinile Cuthindawo (63) were brutally murdered when a 33-year-old Nkosinathi Pepe went on a murderous spree on Friday 3 April.

Police said, armed with a firearm and a knife, Pepe allegedly "first kicked down the door of the homestead" of the elderly man before stabbing him to death.

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, says Pepe then went to two different homesteads where he allegedly stabbed the two women to death.

An off-duty policeman from the villaged managed to disarm Pepe and found that the firearm was not loaded.

Manatha said angry community members assaulted Pepe before the policeman was able to get them to stop the assault.

Pepe, who was admitted to hospital for treatment later appeared in court on three counts of murder.

He will be back in court again on April 28 and remains in custody.
