The Eastern Cape recorded ten covid19 fatalities according to the latest statistics released on Saturday by Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize.
He said since the last report, seven more deaths were recorded, four in the Eastern Cape, two in the Western Cape, and 1 in Limpopo taking the total number of covid19-related deaths to 86.
Minister Mkhize noted that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Eastern Cape was 488, while the number in the country stood at 4 361.
“The total number of tests conducted to date is 161 004, of which 8 614 were done in the last 24 hours,” he said.
The Minister was in the Eastern Cape this past week where he deployed a team of experts to the province assist it in dealing with the rising number of cases.
Other interventions included the deployment of senior officials to do a proper audit of the available personal protective equipment and other requirements.
The deputy director-general for clinical services, Dr. Litha Matiwane, has been placed in Port Elizabeth to oversee and manage the Covid-19 team and its efforts to flatten the curve in Nelson Mandela Bay, which was identified as a hot-spot.
