EC councillors in court for fraud

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said two councillors from the Walter Sisulu Municipality appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of fraud and theft.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Feni, said Mxolisi Mdumisa and Moahlodi Mokhoabane, appeared in court on the same day.

It is alleged that the two Councillors illegally sold an RDP house in Aliwal North to a member of the public for R150 000.

“It is alleged that during April 2017 Mdumisa and Mokhoabane deceived a 38-year-old woman by agreeing to sell to her an RDP house in exchange for just over R150 000,” Feni said.

“During May 2017, the woman allegedly deposited the amount into their bank account but never received the house.”

The two accused were each granted R1000 bail and their next court appearance will be on 12 June 2018.

Feni said that the Acting Head of the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation in the Eastern Cape, Major-General Zintle Mnonopi, commended the investigating team.

She said General Zintle warned that fraud, theft and corruption by municipal officials would be dealt with severely.
