EC cops shocked following alleged attack by "fake cops"

Eastern Cape police have expressed their shock and concern following an alleged attack on a member of the public by men wearing police uniforms.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills says all South Africans always have the right to ask officers to identify themselves or to get a name from a visible ID tag on the officer's uniform.

A Port Elizabeth man claims that he was manhandled, assaulted and robbed by four men wearing police uniforms in Cape Road - before being dropped off in New Brighton on Saturday night.

The man further alleges that upon arrival at the Humewood police station to lay a charge, he encountered a police woman who was fast asleep behind the desk.

Mills says the woman is not a member of the police force but rather - an admin clerk capturing data.

She said the matter was still being viewed in a serious light and was being investigated.
