EC cops make big dagga bust


Eastern Cape police have arrested a total of four suspects and seized a large quantity of dagga worth hundreds of thousands of rands in two operations involving various police units.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said police were acting on a tip-off about people loading goods between two vehicles at Brighton Beach, Port Elizabeth, on Sunday night.

She says members of the of the PE K-9 unit and Mount Road police joined the PE Flying Squad in arresting three men.

Swart said they seized 8.5kg of dagga concealed on a truck heading towards Grahamstown.

She says an undisclosed amount of cash was also seized.
The three are due to appear in court Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Swart said "itt further emerged that more dagga was loaded unto another truck which was enroute to George.  PE Flying Squad, PE K9, Humansdorp K9 and Thornhill SAPS 
teamed up and they pulled off the supermarket delivery truck about 40km outside PE on the N2."

"Upon investigation 25 bags containing dagga was seized in the back of the truck valued at about R667 000.  The 27-year-old male driver was detained at Hankey SAPS and he is due to appear 
in the Hankey Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges ranging from the illegal possession of dagga to dealing in dagga."
  
Swart said both trucks were confiscated and will be handed over to their righful owners.

The Cluster Commander of Mount Road SAPS, Major-General Dawie Rabie applauded the members for their swift action in apprehending the suspects and he also thanked the community for their involvement.

"I commend the efforts of the members and I hope that these arrests sends a clear message that we (SAPS) will utilize all our resource to track, trace and apprehend perpetrators of crime so that they can be prosecuted", he said.
