Strikers block access to Katberg Eco Estate

Striking workers at Katberg Eco Golf Estate in the Eastern Cape are preventing some residents living on the estate from leaving.

Workers downed tools last week in a wage strike.

In a notification to guests and home owners, Katberg Leisure Hotel Group Operations Director Russel Osner, informed residents last week that members of the United Association of South Africa had gone on strike.

He also advised that the strikers had closed the road to the Estate and were not allowing vehicles to enter.

Osner said on Monday that the strike was a legal strike with picketing agreements in place with UASA.

However, he said the strikers were in breach of the picketing agreement and "are blocking access on the R-251 to gain access to the Katberg Eco Golf Estate at this point."

Osner said that police have been advised and were "on site".  He said the company is also dealing with their lawyers to take the matter further.

Meanwhile, Algoa FM News spoke to Bee von der Decken, who's parents who are in their eighties live on the estate.

"There are a couple of families on the estate who have nothing to do with Kat Leisure, they are home owners in their own right.  My parents are elderly and are stuck up there and have been forced to stay up there.  The water has been cut by the protesters.  It is just a really difficult situation," she said.
