The South African Police Services have arrested a ninth suspect in connection with the brutal killing of one of their own in December last year.
The 41-year-old Constable Lonwabo Soga was on duty with Constable Siyabonga Nani on the 3rd of December 2019, when they were called out by a group of men who pretended to need assistance.
Upon arrival, Soga was brutally gunned down and his partner was forced to pick up his body, put it at the back of the police van where he was locked up with the deceased.
The suspects then went on a crime spree in the police vehicle.
The first four suspects were arrested just three days after the attack, the fifth was nabbed a few days later in a hospital in Elliot whilst three more were arrested in February this year.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase says the ninth suspect, 40-year-old Sipho Mji was arrested on Wednesday this week and appeared alongside his co-accused in the Mqanduli Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The matter was postponed to the 27th of August for a formal bail application.
Two of the nine suspects are out on bail of R3 000.
They all face charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Lieutenant Colonel Nkwalase says during the initial arrests, police recovered six unlicensed firearms including Constable Soga's service pistol and other police paraphernalia.
