Two suspects have been arrested and a rifle and explosives seized during a raid on a house in the Ngolo Location in the Libode area of the Eastern Cape.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of a "dedicated multidisciplinary team" was acting on “intelligence information” that a criminal suspect was taking refuge in the house in the area.
“On Saturday, the team comprising of Mthatha Crime Intelligence, SAPS Mthatha Flying Squad and K9 unit searched a house in the mentioned location for illegal firearms and a suspect wanted in cash in transit robberies”.
Naidu said during the search, which started in the yard, an M24 rifle was recovered from an old tank with a magazine, and five rounds of live ammunition.
She said police also found a pink school bag in the lounge of the house containing five blasting cartridges, as well as a rifle magazine with no ammunition, packets of cigarettes and a counterfeit money detector.
Naidu said two suspects aged 21 and 24 years old were arrested on charges of the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and the possession of explosives.
They are expected to appear in court soon.
