Five members of the Queenstown flying squad appeared in court today on charges of corruption along with a reservist and a civilian.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, says they were arrested yesterday by members of a multi-disciplinary team.
He says the charges against them relate to the taking of bribes in relation to the exchange of drugs.
Captain Tonjeni says two of the five were granted bail.
He says they'll all be back in court again next week.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga, has commended the arrests. "The arrests should send a very strong message to all members and employees of the SAPS. As the custodians of law and order we will not hesitate to arrest our own members or employees when they involve themselves in any form of criminality. This is not the last operation, many more will be seen in the near future and arrests are imminent. We will not tolerate corrupt activities by any member or employee," she said.
