The 36-year-old Eastern Cape policeman, charged with theft of state property and negligent loss of a firearm, has been granted bail of 2000 rand.
Mninawa Nqunqa appeared briefly in the city's Magistrates Court on Monday following his arrest last week Friday.
Nqunqe allegedly reported a case of robbery on Friday which supposedly took place in front of a hotel in Prospect Hill in Central.
The 36-year-old policeman from Mthatha alleged that he was robbed of his state firearm, cash and a cellphone.
He was arrested after video footage outside the hotel revealed that he met two men who got into his vehicle and him giving the men his belongings including the firearm.
His case has been remanded to the second of November for further investigation.
