A policeman was wounded when gunmen accosted him and a colleague in New Brighton, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Thursday night.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said the two Sergeants were on duty when they stopped in Nkonjane Street.
They were approached by four gunmen who ordered them to hand over their firearms.
“When the officers refused, the suspects split up and went to both sides of the vehicle. As the driver opened his door he was shot in the upper body,” Tonjeni said.
He said both SAPS members were forced out of the police van and robbed of their firearms and personal belongings.
“The suspects drove off in the police vehicle which was later found abandoned in Jam-Ally Street in Kwazakele. The other Sergeant was not injured,” Tonjeni added.
The wounded police member was admitted to a hospital for medical attention.
The Hawks are investigating cases of attempted murder as well as vehicle hijacking and robbery.
