An Eastern Cape policeman was killed after a scuffle with a man brandishing a firearm.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, says the gunman also died during the altercation in a village at Tsolo on Sunday.
The policeman was responding to a complaint from a member of the public about a person recklessly pointing a firearm.
Mathe says when police arrived on the scene, the 53-year-old Warrant Officer became involved in a scuffle with the man during which shots were fired.
The policeman, with 33-years service, and the gunman were both fatally wounded.
The names of the deceased were not released.
