EC cop in hot water for joy ride in SAPS vehicle

File

An Eastern Cape policeman faces disciplinary action for lying about being robbed and hijacked of his SAPS vehicle, when in fact he was driving friends around to a tavern.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the 34-year-old Constable had reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning of 20 August, in Dalisile at Ngcobo.

He said the policeman reported that he had been confronted by unknown suspects after taking a sexual assault victim to a medical facility when he was accosted by unidentified suspects who pulled him out of the vehicle and drove off.

The police vehicle was found near the Sigidi Forest the next day.

Kinana said, however, that a video had emerged showing the policeman and his friends carrying what looked like bottles of liquor while alighting from the back of a marked police vehicle.

SAPS management instructed that disciplinary steps be taken against the Constable for violating their code of conduct and damaging injured the image of the South African Police Service.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, said that those who bring the SAPS name into disrepute will face disciplinary action.
