The SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape has expressed its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Sergeant Solomzi Zono stationed at the Qumbu SAPS.
It is alleged that Sergeant Zono was en-route to report for duty on Christmas Day at about 3pm when he decided to enter a shop in Main Street, Qumbu.
A robbery was in progress at the shop and he was shot in the upper body during the incident.
He later succumbed to his wounds at a hospital in Mthatha. Sgt Zono joined the SAPS in 1993 and was attached to the Crime Prevention Unit at Qumbu.
Two suspects, aged 23 and 24 were arrested on Sunday.
They appeared in the Qumbu Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder and business robbery.
