Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has strongly condemned the “unethical and corrupt behaviour” of a Police Sergeant who was arrested for being in the possession of a stolen firearm and drugs.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the arrest was made on Saturday, on the N2 national road between Kinkelbos and Colchester during a multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven operation.
He said members of the Anti-Gang Unit and Provincial Organised Crime Investigation had received and acted upon information that the 33-year-old policeman, based at Crime Intelligence in East London, was possibly transporting firearms and drugs.
A search of his vehicle uncovered “an unlicensed revolver, the member’s service pistol, .38 rounds of ammunition, a digital scale, a laptop, two cell phones, tik (21.1g) and an undisclosed, but substantial amount of cash.”
Kinana said the firearm was reported stolen in Walmer in Gqeberha in January 2019.
The policeman will appear in court soon.
