The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have a 37-year-old police officer on allegations of corruption.
Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said the Detective Sergeant is alleged to have demanded payment of R2000 from a criminal suspect whose vehicle was impounded on a drugs charge.
She said the suspect in that matter was arrested by the Matatiele Dog Unit for conveying drugs and his vehicle was impounded.
Mgolodela said after the man was released on bail he went back to the police to inquire about his confiscated vehicle when the policeman allegedly made the payment demand.
She said the matter was reported to Mbizana SAPS and the policeman was arrested on Thursday.
He is due to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
