EC community spare rape suspect


An Eastern Cape man arrested by community members for the allege rape of a young woman was spared their wrath, but will face justice when he appears in court on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, said that the 35-year-old man was arrested by Kei Bridge police on Saturday night for alleged rape of a 22- year-old woman.

“The suspect allegedly raped the victim at Mkhonjane Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth. The suspect was chased and caught by the members of the community after he allegedly raped the victim,” Manatha said.

“The victim was sleeping alone at her home when she was accosted by the suspect. The victim alerted the community after she was allegedly raped by the suspect,” he added.

Manatha said that the community managed to catch the suspect and phoned the Kei Bridge Police who quickly responded. “The suspect was not assaulted by the community.”

He said the man will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of rape.

Manatha said that Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey thanked the community for their efforts in combating crime and in their assistance in apprehending criminals.
