A suspected carjacker has been killed in a shootout with police on the N-2 near Kinkelbos outside Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said the drama started when a VW employee's leased car was hijacked in Kwanobuhle early Tuesday morning.
She says the vehicle was spotted in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth later that night.
Members of the car hijacking task team as well as members of the PE Flying Squad responded and pursued the Polo on the N-2 towards Kinkelbos where she said the suspect opened fire on police.
Swart said police returned fire fatally wounding the suspect.
Police recovered a stolen firearm with the serial number filed off.
Swart said the matter will also be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
