Eastern Cape police and the Provincial Education Department are investigating the circumstances under which a five-year-old boy was locked inside a classroom at a school in Nxeba (Cradock) since Friday.
The boy was found on Monday and brought to a Gqeberha hospital for treatment following the harrowing ordeal.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said a missing person's case was opened on Friday when the child did not return home from school.
He said police were later informed that the child was later found “under dubious circumstances”, which are currently under investigation. He said the child was hospitalised in a stable condition.
“It was alleged that the child was locked inside a classroom,” Nkohli said.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Education Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said they were aware of the incident and sent a team to the school to investigate.
He told Algoa FM News that the Department was expecting a full report on Thursday.
Mtima said the child has returned home to Nxuba (Cradock).
