EC authorities call for calm amidst probe into taxi-boss killing

Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe and Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga have appealed to members of the community to allow the police space as they continue to probe the murder of a taxi boss in Gqeberha on Thursday.

Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the deceased, aged 61, believed to be a chairperson of one of the taxi associations died in a hail of bullets.

He says the incident happened in broad daylight when three gunmen fired several shots while he was sitting in his car at the Njoli Taxi Rank.

The three suspects then jumped into a getaway vehicle and are still at large.

Binqose says the motive of the shooting is unknown, but police are following solid leads to bring the perpetrators to book.

"The two leaders of law enforcement in the province have also appealed to community members to avoid spreading rumors and speculations which have the potential to frustrate the investigation", he said.
