EC accidents claim six lives

At least six people were killed in two separate accidents on Eastern Cape roads at the weekend.

Five women died instantly in a head-on collision on the R61 between Bizana and Magusheni in the Eastern Cape on Saturday evening.

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell says a Toyota Bakkie with about 15 occupants, collided head-on with a Kia LDV with 2 occupants.

He says 12 critically injured people were transported to St Patrick's Hospital in Bizana.

Bramwell says it is alleged that one of the bakkies lost control, and veered straight into the oncoming vehicle.

He says it is suspected that speed and alcohol were the contributing factors.

In a separate accident on the N2 at the Mooiplaas/Kei Mouth turn-off just after 4 am on Sunday morning, a man was killed in an accident when a Toyota Avanza hit a tree.

Bramwell says four men and a woman were seriously injured, and taken to hospital.

He says it is alleged that the driver of the vehicle failed to stop at an intersection, and collided with a tree.

Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.
