The Eastern Cape matric class of 2021 recorded a pass rate of 73%, an improvement of 4.9% over last year.
This was announced on Thursday by Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshegka, who announced an overall pass rate for the class of 2021 of 76.4%.
She said only one province, Limpopo (66.7%,) achieved an overall pass rate of below 70%, while five provinces performed above the 70% pass rate while three provinces performed above 80%.
The Free State produced the highest pass rate at 85.7% followed by Gauteng at 82.8%, and the Western Cape at 81.2%.
Motshekga said the uptick in the Eastern Cape matric pass rate was the second-highest provincial improvement in the matric results behind the Northern Cape which recorded an overall pass rate of 71.4%, an improvement of 5.4% over 2020.
“The 2021 academic year, similarly to the 2020 academic year, will remain an extraordinary year for all sectors in the world, and our Basic Education Sector in particular,” Minister Motshekga said.
She said the Class of 2021, was the most affected by the CVOD-19 pandemic, as they had to endure two consecutive years of harsh exposure to the unrelenting COVID-19 pandemic.
“Government, with its Basic Education Departments and its strategic partners, worked tirelessly to strike a balance between saving lives and saving the 2021 academic year,” she said.
