Eastern Cape Universities march against gender violence

Hundreds of students and staff from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University marched against gender-based violence on Tuesday.

The march, done in solidarity with other Eastern Cape Universities, forms part of a national community dedicated to the cause of bringing awareness to - and publicly rejecting violence against women.

The walk kicked off at the university's North campus and ended off at the South campus library.

Students were vocal in their support of their initiative and said that it was important to stand up for the rights of women.

NMMU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Thokozile Mayekiso said she was happy to back the initiative.

"I'm here to lend my support to the cause to stop gender violence. We have been seeing an escalation of gender violence in our country and now we are saying as an academic institution lets add our voices, to the voices of the nation." said Mayekiso
