Eastern Cape temporary teachers owed millions

Temporary teachers in the Eastern Cape are owed over half a billion rand in unpaid salaries.

That's according to the Department of Education, in reply to a parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance.

According to the reply, as at 30 April, 233 temporary teachers appointed in January 2013 were owed R258.5 million.

1217 teachers appointed from April 2013 were owed R337.5 million.

DA MP, Michael de Villiers, says he will seek answers from the Department of Basic Education.

"If you want teachers to deliver in schools, at the end of the month they must receive their salaries. I'm going to put a question to the basic education minister to address the situation." says de Villiers.
