South African sheep shearer, Mayenzeke Shweni was crowned world champion blade shearer at the World Shearing Championships in New Zealand on Saturday.
Cape Wools' spokesperson, Ona Viljoen says Shweni's team-mate, three-time champion Zweliwile Hans, finished second.
Shweni and Hans are full-time shearers from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape.
Wool shearers from 25 countries competed for the world crown in the hand and blade shearing events at the biennial competition.
Viljoen says the six-member SA team had been in New Zealand since October preparing for the event.
She says sheep shearing is recognised in South Africa as a national sport, and the Sheep Shearing Federation is affiliated to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.
