Eastern Cape school destroyed by learners

Butterworth Police Station Commander, Colonel Sipho Hokwana, has appealed to learners not to resort to violence, vandalism and the destruction of public property in the name of protest action.

Hokwana was reacting to Monday's incident in which angry learners burnt down  Mpozolo Senior Secondary School in  Mendu Village, Willowvale.

The damage is estimated to be in the region of one million rand.

Police captain Jackson Manatha says the learners were complaining about the school buildings needing renovations and the fact that authorities were not  attending to the problem.

The schools inspector was called in but the learners allegedly pelted his vehicle with stones before burning down the school.

A case of arson and malicious damage to property has been opened, but there have been no arrests.
