The Eastern Cape Transport Ministry says that more than 97% of learners who use scholar transport were transported to school today.
Department spokesperson, Ncedo Kumbaca, says this was despite threats by some operators to disrupt the first day of the new school term.
He says last week the department convened a meeting of traffic officers and transport inspectors to put a plan of action into place for Monday.
However, Kumbaca says despite their best intentions, there were some problems in several areas.
"The scholar transport programme took off successfully again today except 3 areas that had some challenges like Lusikisiki, Ngcobo and King Williams Town, but generally we can say learners have been dropped at school this morning successfully with 97% of learners taking part in the program" Kumbaca said.
