Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta has been left traumatised after 5-men tried to hijack her car in East London's Lingelitsha township at the weekend.
Binta was travelling with her bodyguard and a female passenger when they were attacked in broad daylight on Saturday.
A shot was fired which penetrated the front driver’s window and exited through the front passenger’s window.
The bodyguard managed to speed away and drive to the Berlin police station.
Eastern Cape safety and liaison spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha says no-arrests have been made but that an intensive police investigation is underway.
"We are shocked at the attack but what we can tell the public that the commissioner is fine. She was unharmed. Her driver suffered slight injuries due to the broken glass. We would also like to condemn the incident and the subsequent attack on other people that happened thereafter, because the suspects went on a further criminal rampage after the attack on Binta" he said.
