Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has appealed to the public to alert port control if they see anything floating in the water along the shoreline.
This, after a large container washed ashore at Jeffreys Bay on Tuesday.
Municipality spokesperson, Roland Williams, says Transnet and other relevant authorities are dealing with the matter as it is a maritime safety issue.
The origins of the cylindrical containers is not known.
Williams says members of the public who spots anything floating in the sea should contact Port Elizabeth port control.
