Eastern Cape MEC tries to calm tensions in Sterkspruit

Eastern Cape Local Govenment MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, is meeting with the community of Sterkspruit in an effort to put an end to the violent protests that have been taking place in the town.

Residents have been on a violent protest since last month, vandalising businesses and burning tyres preventing access to the town.

Last Friday police used rubber bullets to disperse protesting residents.

Sterkspruit residents are demanding that their municipality be a stand-alone council and not paired with Lady Grey which they say is slowing down service delivery.
