A man, convicted of raping a one-year-old girl in Ngqamakwe, near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Mthatha High Court.
Police Captain Jackson Manatha says 22-year old Alberton Lungelo Nto-zini, raped his girlfriend's child on June 11, 2008.
He says Ntozini wanted to play with the child on the day of the incident.
Manatha says the suspect then returned the baby at a later stage, but the mother discovered that the baby was restless and she became suspicious and took the baby to a doctor to be examined.
He says the doctor confirmed that the baby had been raped.
The mother reported the incident to police, and following an investigation, Ntozini was later arrested.
He was convicted and sentenced on Friday.
