Nursing union Denosa has slated the Eastern Cape health department for its apparent lack of interest in resolving a long-standing pay dispute.
The union says health workers in the Amathole District are owed money from as far back as 2009.
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa has now called on the National Department of Health to intervene.
Denosa's Koliswa Tota, says the outstanding money is for human resource-related payments to current and former employees.
