Eastern Cape Health Department to ramp up fight against COVID-19

The Eastern Cape Department of Health said it would continue intensifying the fight against COVID-19 this week through a series of engagements with stakeholders that include health workers, organised labor, religious leaders, and tavern owners.

Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said this is to ensure that everyone plays their respective roles in the fight against the resurgence of the coronavirus in the province.

Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba will also be joined by Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu.

MEC Gomba said the provincial government was concerned about the surge in new infections.

"This is why we need behavioural change because this virus, as we have been saying since day one, moves when people move. When people don't wear masks like it has been the case in some areas, that means the virus spread faster,” the MEC said.

Gomba said authorities have been meeting with tavern owners to ensure compliance with regulations, saying that "large gatherings are super-spreaders”.

Among the things that will be discussed with stakeholders include the call for the traditional initiation season to be reopened this summer season.
