Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance MEC, Fikile Xasa, has expressed his shock at the violence which rocked Stersktroom in the troubled Inkwanca Municipality.
This, after six people were arrested when supporters of mayor, Luleka Ghubula and those supporting former mayor, Mthandazo Qamn-gwana, clashed in the town on Tuesday.
The violence then spread, leading to an attack on Ghubula's home and the torching of Qamn-gwana's house, one of three set alight during the clashes.
Police said one of the six will be charged with attempted murder for shooting at a rival group, while the others will be charged with public violence and malicious damage to property.
MEC Xasa's spokesperson, Manmekli Ngam.
"The view of the MEC is that any problem areas or complaints cannot be resolved through violent means. The MEC therefore would like to invite affected parties to try and find a solution to the problems of the Inkwanca municipality"
Ngam says a meeting to address the problems in Sterkstroom will be held on Thursday.
"There is a meeting that is planned between the office of the MEC and the Municipality of Inkwanca to try and find a solution so that normality can return" he added
The MEC added that those arrested for damaging other people's property must face the full wrath of the law.
