Eastern Cape gets it's sixth nature reserve


The Eastern Cape's Mhlonto Nature Reserve has become the sixth provincial nature reserve.

This was announced on Tuesday by the Department of Economic Development, Environment Affairs and Tourism.
 
It says the Mhlonto Nature Reserve located near the towns of Tsolo and Qumbu is also the province's third largest nature reserve.

The main attractions in the nature reserve include the majestic Tsitsi and Tina Falls as well as a myriad of plants.

Wildlife is also a key attraction which includes the blue and grey duikers, baboons, dassies and a variety of small cats as well as a wide variety of bird species.

The Park's management also plans to re-introduce the mountain or hartmans zebra, eland, blesbuck and red hartebeest to the area.

The Department's Tobile Gowa  told AlgoaFM News that a total of R26.7 million has been invested in Mhlonto Nature Reserve.

He also added ,that a total of 118 of jobs were already created for the community during the building of the fence around the Reserve. 

"When we have added other activities, issues of hiking trails, mountain climbing, ecotourism, cultural tourism and others.We are likely to see more work opportunities for the local communities" -He said.
