Eastern Cape Education Minister visits troubled Sterkspruit

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, is in Sterkspruit on Thursday.

He's joined by superintendent-general Mthunywa Ngonzo at the meeting.

The Bhiso education department says their meeting is aimed at ensuring and maintaining stability in the Sterkspruit education district.

Schooling had been severely disrupted during recent protests which effectively brought the town to a standstill.

Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima.

"The management of the district of education and the union are in a closed session. The intention is to iron our their differences. The Department is here to listen to them"

Meanwile, the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism says Bongani Gxilishe has been appointed head of the department effective from Thursday.

Gxilishe was the head of department for Roads and Public Works in the province from April 2010, until the end of his tenure in March this year.

His appointment follows the resignation of Bulumko Nelana last December.

MEC, Mcebisi Jonas, welcomed his appointment as a step towards ensuring continuity in the process of fulfilling the mandate of the department.
