Eastern Cape councillor gunned down in cold blood


The SAPS Organised Crime unit is investigating a murder case after a Mayoral Committee Member from Mbhashe Municipality was murdered on Friday afternoon.

Eastern Cape provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the incident happened around 13h30 at Sofuthe Locality in Dutywa.

According to information, the 47 year-old councillor had parked her car in front of her business where she went to collect money.

Preliminary investigations revealed that as she was busy counting the money inside the car when she was confronted by two men, one of whom was wearing a balaclava.

Brigadier Kinana says they shot her dead and fled in a white Toyota Avanza which was parked a few meters from the crime scene.

None of the money was taken and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are thus unknown.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, has ordered that detectives spare no effort in bringing the councillor's killers to book.

Meanwhile: the SA Local Government Association in the area has expressed its sadness and condolences at the murder of the deceased and identified her as Councillor Nomxolisi Nqwena Maliwa.

SALGA says in a statement that councillor Ngwena Maliwa served as the chairperson of the ethics and members interest committee for the Mbhashe Local Municipality.

It described her murder as the work of an assassin who had shot her dead on the spot while her vehicle was stationed in the municipality’s business area.

The Association said that while the police are still investigating, it condemns the killing in the strongest possible terms and hopes that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
