Authorities have recovered the body of a woman who was swept away by the floods in the Komani River, the second major deluge to hit the Eastern Cape town.
The Chris Hani District Municipality said she was swept away during a heavy storm in the early hours of Saturday morning, the fourth victim so far in the district to perish in the floods.
CHDM spokesperson, Bulelwa Ganyaza, said the deceased was from the Rhawutini informal settlement, and her remains were identified by family members.
"The heavy rains, which led to flooding, once more affected various areas throughout the district. More bridges have collapsed in Emalahleni Local Municipality area. In Komani, informal settlements, roads, low-lying areas, and bridges have been severely affected,” she said.
Ganyaza said about 145 people have been moved from their homes to a place of shelter at the Gali Thembani facility.
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, visited Komani while the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers is once more part of the stakeholders providing relief to those affected.
CHDM Executive Mayor, Wongama Gela, has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
