East London police arrested 73 suspects for various crimes in operations over the weekend.
Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Mtati Tana, says operations which started on Friday focussed on reducing crimes that occur as a result of people abusing alcohol.
He says 38 suspects were arrested for serious crimes like murder, serious assault, possession of stolen property and possession of drugs.
Tana says 18 were arrested for being drunk and disorderly in public and 17 were for traffic offences.
He says police also conducted patrols and visited liquor outlets to ensure that they were complying with liquor laws.
All the suspects arrested will appear in court this week.
